BIRTH & GROWTH OF FACULTY OF ANIMAL SCIENCE AND EXPORT AGRICULTURE

The Uva Wellassa University (UWU) was established in Badulla in 2005 with the aim of enhancing the opportunities for rapid development of the Uva Province. The academic programmes of UWU were commenced on 07th August 2006 under three faculties; Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture (FASEA), Faculty of Management and Faculty of Science and Technology with a vision of being the center of excellence in value addition to national resources base. FASEA aims to achieve excellence in agricultural education with special emphasis on the value addition to the local agricultural and aquatic resources. It comprised of two Departments from its inception, namely Department of Animal Science and Department of Export Agriculture, each offering a unique SLQF Level 6 degree programme, Bachelor of Animal Science Honours (BAScHons) and Bachelor of Science Honours (BScHons) in Export Agriculture, respectively. Heading towards the university vision, FASEA introduced three more SLQF Level 6 degree programmes under the existing Departments. Total annual student intake for the Faculty is approximately 250-300 students.

Furthermore, FASEA awards full-time and part-time postgraduate degrees (MPhil) at present under each Department.

Two degree programmes of the Faculty, namely Bachelor of Animal Science Honours (BAScHons) and Bachelor of Science Honours (BScHons) in Export Agriculture were reviewed by a panel of external reviewers appointed by UGC in 2012/2013. Based on the recommendations given by the reviewers, the curricula of the above-mentioned degree programme were revised with the participation of internal and external stakeholders. During the curriculum revision processes, Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) and relevant Subject Benchmark Statements (SBS) were referred in preparation of graduate profile and attributes, programme outcomes, and course specifications.
