Dr. M.M.S.N. Premetilake
Director
Centre for Gender Equity and Equality

Being a man, woman or someone with gender identification has social, psychological, cultural and behavioral ramifications. It is highly challenging to provide them with equity and equality in many facets of university life.

It has been observed that the Sri Lankan University system has serious flaws related to gender inequity and violence particularly sexual and gender based violence (SGBV).

As the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality of Uva Wellassa University (CGEE, UWU), the challenge has been well accepted and we are currently addressing and solving many issues related to gender inequity and violence.

The CGEE, UWU has a clear policy framework and bylaws to direct the institution in cooperating gender equity and equality in all staff and student activities.

There is a working committee of CGEE, UWU, who are responsible for determining the strategies for Sexual and gender based violence prevention in the university and equipping staff and students with the knowledge and abilities they need to prevent and address SGBV.

As subcommittees of the CGEE, UWU, there are four faculty cells which is a prerequisite of the GEE policy framework. Its goal is to support the CGEE, UWU by fostering a gender sensitive environment at the faculty level.

Collectively, CGEE works hard to keep UWU a place where all of its members can work and learn in gender sensitive environment.
