Activities Conducted by CGEE

Workshop on Gender Equity and Equality

The workshop on ‘Gender Equity and Equality” organized by the center for Gender Equity and Equality, Uva Wellassa University was successfully conducted from September 18, 2017 to September 20, 2017 at Riverside Holiday Inn, Badulla. The awareness workshop was organized as an initiative step to create gender sensitive environment within the university community. This workshop was conducted as two separate parallel sessions for selected staff members and student representatives. Prof. Maithree Wickramasinghe, Dr. Wijaya Jayathilake and Dr. Harini Amarasooriya participated as the resource persons for the workshop from the standing committee, UGC and Prof. Kamala Liyanage participated as a resource person for the student workshop.

Training program on ‘Gender Issues in the world of work’

A scholarship was awarded for Dr. A.P Henagamage, Director, CGEE by the Government of India to undergo a training program on ‘Gender Issues in the world of work’ which was conducted by V.V Giri National Labour Institute, Uttar Pradesh, India under ITEC/TCS of Colombo Plan program from December 4, 2017 to December 22, 2017.

Opening ceremony of CGEE

Opening ceremony of the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality was held on February 22, 2018 at the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality with the participation of the Vice Chancellor, Uva Wellassa University as the chief Guest and other invited academic and administrative officers.

Piloting Emergency Safety Mobile App Awareness Program by ICTA

University Grants commission with the assistance from Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka has developed a mobile application to be used in emergency situations which may arise due to the threat of ragging or other forms of violence both within and outside the university premises. It has been developed in such a way that it is conveniently applicable via most common mobile platforms and is easily accessible in any emergency situations. Prior to launching the proposed system in all universities, UGC has selected Uva Wellassa University to pilot the “Emergency Safety App”. Upon the agreement made between UGC and UWU, ICTA visited the Uva Wellassa University to have an awareness program on ‘Emergency Safety APP on February 17, 2018.

Appointment of Task Force Members

As per the decision taken at the meeting with ICTA officials on ‘Piloting the Emergency Safety App’ on February 17, 2018 at Uva Wellassa University, task force members were appointed to monitor the progress of the Emergency Safety Mobile App. Task force members were categorized under two levels (level 1 and level 2) based on the responsibility of monitoring the mobile app and the level of authority to take actions against the complains receiving through the mobile app. Council approval was also obtained from the 132nd Council of the university for the appointment of task force members.

Technical Session on “Emergency Safety Mobile App”

A technical session was conducted between the level 1 of the task force members including IT team and ICTA officials on piloting of “Emergency Safety Mobile App” on May 21, 2018.

TOT workshop on Gender Mainstreaming

Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop on Gender Mainstreaming was conducted by the UGC in collaboration with commonwealth of learning from June 5-7, 2018. The overall objective of the program was to facilitate TOT in Gender Mainstreaming who are expected to initiate capacity building programs in their respective universities. Four academic members were participated in this workshop as the representatives from Uva Wellassa University.

Inter University Gender Festival Phase 3

Twelve selected students from each faculty were participated as representatives from Uva Wellassa University for the phase 3 of the Inter University Gender Festival on “Journey Towards Gender Equity and Equality” which was held at University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka from February 20, 2018 to February 23, 2018. Students performed a drama and a short film under the theme of Gender equity and equality and gender-based violence in the final round of the inter university gender festival.
