Marking another milestone under the collaboration among the Uva Wellassa University (UWU), the Go Study Global Education, P. R. China (GSGE), and the Guangxi Vocational & Technical College, P. R. China (GVTC), Prof. H.M.S.K. Herath, Dean, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, and Dr. G.A.A.R. Perera, Senior Lecturer (Gr. II), Department of Food Science and Technology, attended to the ‘2023 China – ASEAN Tea Industry Vocational Education Cooperation Forum’ which was held from 14th to 17th September 2023 in Nanning, Guangxi, P. R. China. This forum was hosted by the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous, P.R. China and it was jointly organized by the Department of Education of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, P.R. China, the GSGE, and the GVTC.

In this forum, Dr. G.A.A.R. Perera delivered a keynote speech on ‘Sri Lankan Tea Industry: Current Status, Challenges and Future Directions’ on 15th September 2023. A panel discussion was held on 16th September 2023 to discuss about future cooperation among the collaborators. Attending to this discussion, Prof. H.M.S.K. Herath elaborated about the potential of expanding and strengthening cooperation in education, research and cultural exchange among the parties. In this respect, the organizers promised to work hard to connect more institutions with UWU.

We also had opportunities to see an industrial exhibition organized by the GVTC and to participate in a tea tasting session. Further, a visit was arranged to see a jasmine garden, a jasmine tea factory and the tea manufacturing facility of the GVTC.

We wish to extend our gratitude to the organizers of this event for inviting two representatives from UWU to attend this forum and for sponsoring the visit to China.

The awarding ceremony of the Nineth Certificate Course in Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) was held at the Board Room of the Senate Building of the University on 27th of July 2021 and the ceremony was graced by Prof. J.L. Ratnasekera, the Vice Chancellor of the Uva Wellassa University, the Deans of Faculties, the Registrar, the Bursar, the Actg. Librarian and the other Management Committee members of the Staff Development Center.

The nineth CTHE was concluded on 07th of April 2021 by completing 150 hours of lectures according to the HETC guidelines (CDP/Academic/04). Academic portfolios submitted by the staff members were evaluated by a panel of resource personnel to the Induction Programme according to the standard Portfolio Evaluation Guidelines.

Seven staff members successfully completed the CTHE by completing the course modules and submitting the Academic Portfolio and are eligible to receive the CTHE Certificate with the effect from 07th of April 2021. According to the awarding scheme introduced in 2017, following staff members who performed well in the CTHE programme were rewarded this year.

The Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture will commence Online Delivery of Courses of the Semester II of Year I, II and III for all five degree programmes of the faculty with effect from April 01, 2021.

Ms. S.P.N.P. Subasinghe and Mr. R.C. Prasad have won the awards for The Most Creative Narrated Article and The Most Scientific Article respectively at “TRACTATE 2020”,the International Article Writing Competition on “Health Security through Food in the Light of COVID-19” which was organized by the Association of Food Science and Technology, University of Sri Jayawardanapura.

The competition was open to national and international undergraduates. This competition was conducted to celebrate World’s Food Day -2020. Over 150 worldwide undergraduates were participated for the competition and from that 9 articles were selected under several categories.

Ms. S.P.N.P. Subasinghe (UWU/EAG/16/050) and Mr. R.C. Prasad (UWU/EAG/16/052) are 4th year students who are doing Food Processing Technology as their majoring in Department of Export Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka.

Department of Export Agriculture, Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, Uva Wellassa University proudly celebrates the launch of the inaugural issue of the magazine, “HARVEST”. The magazine, “HARVEST” will be published biannually in months of June and December. The Department of Export Agriculture initiated this magazine with the aim of improving creativity and written communication skills of undergraduates. Furthermore, this will enhance the interaction between academic staff and undergraduates of the Department as this is a collective effort of both parties. “HARVEST” features different sections such as news and events, timely important scientific articles, creative write-ups, research highlights and innovations.
