Actuaries are professionals involved in assessment, evaluation and management of the future financial risks and they perform as problem solvers, business analysts, consultants, and financial risk assessors all rolled into one. Actuaries manage financial risk and make financial sense of the future for their clients. Actuarial skills are valuable for any business managing long-term financial projects both in the public and private sectors. It has applications in the field of life insurance, General insurance, Health insurance, Reinsurance, Calculation of Gratuity, Pension, Leave Encashment, Assets Valuation, Pricing of Securities and Derivatives, Risk Management, Risk valuation and so on.

Uva Wellassa University accommodating the request of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka will offer this course for the first time in Sri Lanka under the University system.


Course Objectives

  • To facilitate the skills in mathematical and statistical techniques that are of relevance to actuarial work
  • To provide a grounding in stochastic processes and survival models
  • To provide knowledge of the instruments used by firms to raise finance and manage financial risk
  • To facilitate the skill to interpret the accounts and financial statements of companies and financial institutions
  • To provide a grounding in the fundamental concepts of microeconomics and macroeconomics that are of relevance to actuarial work
  • To provide a grounding in business management and business ethics

The course covers all syllabus topics detailed in the syllabus guidelines of theĀ  International Actuarial Association (IAA).

The topics covered are:

  • Financial Mathematics
  • Probability and Mathematical Statistics
  • Economics
  • Accounting
  • Modeling
  • Statistical Methods
  • Actuarial Mathematics
  • Investment and Asset Analysis
  • Actuarial Risk Management
  • Professionalism.

Moreover, the course covers seven of the 9 core modules of the professional course of the Institute of Actuaries, United Kingdom. The modules covered are: CT1 (Financial Mathematics), CT2 (Finance and Financial Reporting), CT3 (Probability and Mathematical Statistics), CT4 (Models), CT6 (Statistical Methods), CT7 (Economics), and CT9 (Business Awareness)
As per IAA guidelines the course aims to impart good knowledge of the actuarial science and skill to solve well-defined problems as needed by actuaries.
